Ingredients

  • 3 tbsp butter
  • 3 large yellow onions thinly sliced
  • 1 tsp sugar
  • 2 lb frozen fully cooked meatballs not thawed
  • 2 cups beef broth
  • 1 tbsp Worcestershire sauce
  • 1 tsp dried thyme
  • 2 tbsp cornstarch mixed with 2 tbsp cold water
  • 6 slices Swiss or provolone cheese
  • fresh parsley chopped, optional

Instructions

  • Melt the butter in a large skillet over medium heat. Add the onions and sugar and cook, stirring often, for 15 to 20 minutes, until soft and deep golden.
  • Put the frozen meatballs in a 6-quart slow cooker. Spread the onions over them.
  • Stir the broth, Worcestershire and thyme together and pour over the top.
  • Cover and cook on LOW for 4 hours or HIGH for 2 hours, until the meatballs are hot all the way through (165°F).
  • Stir in the cornstarch mixture. Cover and cook 15 minutes more, until the sauce thickens.
  • Lay the cheese slices over the top, cover, and let them melt, about 10 minutes. Sprinkle with parsley and serve.

Notes

Frozen fully cooked meatballs must be heated to 165°F. To serve as dinner, spoon over mashed potatoes or egg noodles. Keep on WARM for parties.
