Slow cooker creamy ranch chicken is a four-ingredient dump dinner: chicken breasts sprinkled with a packet of dry ranch seasoning, a splash of chicken broth and a block of cream cheese on top, cooked low until tender, then shredded right into the melted cream cheese for a rich, tangy sauce. It takes 5 minutes to prep and serves 6.
How to make it: Lay the chicken in the slow cooker, sprinkle on the ranch mix, pour the broth around the sides and set the cream cheese on top. Cover and cook on LOW for 4 to 5 hours or HIGH for 2½ to 3, until the chicken reaches 165°F. Shred it with two forks and stir until the sauce is smooth and creamy.
Why You’ll Love It
- Four ingredients: chicken, cream cheese, ranch seasoning and broth.
- 5 minutes of prep: no browning, no chopping.
- So many ways to serve: over rice, potatoes or pasta, or in sandwiches.
- Kid-friendly: creamy, mild and full of ranch flavor.
What Is Creamy Ranch Chicken?
It’s shredded chicken cooked in a ranch-seasoned cream cheese sauce. The dry ranch mix brings the herby, garlicky, tangy flavor of ranch dressing, and the cream cheese melts into the cooking juices to make it creamy. It’s close to crack chicken, which adds bacon and cheddar; this recipe keeps it simple, and you can add those extras if you like.
Ingredient Notes
Chicken breasts: 2 to 2 1/2 pounds boneless, skinless. Thighs work too and stay extra juicy.
Cream cheese: one 8-ounce block, full fat or light. Full fat makes the creamiest sauce.
Ranch seasoning: one 1-ounce packet of dry ranch mix.
Chicken broth: 1/2 cup low-sodium, so the ranch mix doesn’t make it too salty.

- 8 oz cream cheese (1 block, full fat or light)
- 1 packet dry ranch seasoning mix (1 ounce)

How to Make Slow Cooker Creamy Ranch Chicken
1. Add the chicken. Arrange chicken breasts in an even layer in the bottom of a slow cooker.
2. Season and top. Sprinkle ranch seasoning evenly over chicken. Pour broth around the sides of the slow cooker and place cream cheese block in the center on top.
3. Slow cook. Cover and cook on LOW for 4 to 5 hours or HIGH for 2½ to 3 hours without lifting the lid.
4. Shred. When the chicken is very tender and reaches 165°F, shred it directly in the slow cooker using two forks.
5. Stir. Stir shredded chicken into melted cream cheese and cooking liquid until a smooth creamy sauce forms.
6. Season and rest. Taste and adjust seasoning with pepper or salt if needed. Thin sauce with a splash of milk or broth if desired, then let sit on warm for 10 minutes before serving.
Tips for the Creamiest Ranch Chicken
- Use a block of cream cheese. It melts more smoothly than whipped or tub cream cheese.
- Keep the lid on. Every peek lets out heat and adds cooking time.
- Shred in the pot. The chicken soaks up the sauce as you stir.
- Adjust the thickness. Add a splash of milk or broth for a looser sauce.
- Taste before salting. Ranch mix is already salty.
How to Serve Creamy Ranch Chicken
Spoon it over rice, mashed potatoes, egg noodles or baked potatoes for dinner. Pile it on toasted buns for sandwiches or sliders, roll it into tortillas for wraps, or toss it with pasta and a little extra broth. Leftovers make a great dip with crackers or tortilla chips.
Variations
- Bacon and cheddar: stir in crumbled bacon and shredded cheddar at the end, crack chicken style.
- Buffalo ranch: add a few spoonfuls of buffalo sauce.
- Thighs: use boneless thighs for richer meat.
- Vegetables: stir in steamed broccoli or peas before serving.
- Homemade ranch mix: use dried parsley, dill, garlic powder, onion powder, salt and pepper.

Storage & Reheating
Refrigerate leftovers within 2 hours and eat them within 3 to 4 days. Reheat on the stove or in the microwave with a splash of milk until hot, to 165°F. It also freezes well in portions.
Can You Make It on HIGH?
Yes. HIGH cooks it in about half the time, which is handy on busy days. LOW gives slightly more tender chicken that shreds more easily, so use it when you have the time. Either way, keep the lid closed and check that the thickest piece reaches 165°F before shredding. If your slow cooker runs hot, start checking a little early so the chicken doesn’t dry out.
What to Serve With It
Serve it with rice, mashed potatoes, pasta or buns, and a green vegetable or salad.
More creamy chicken dinners: creamy ranch chicken (the skillet version), oven-baked 3-ingredient creamy chicken, creamy garlic chicken and creamy baked Amish chicken. More ranch favorites: chicken bacon ranch casserole with potatoes and chicken bacon ranch pinwheels.

Shredded chicken in a sauce of melted cream cheese, broth and ranch seasoning.
How do you make chicken with a ranch seasoning packet?
Sprinkle the packet over chicken, add a little broth and cream cheese, and slow cook until tender.

Yes. The sauce will be a little thinner but still creamy.
How long do leftovers keep?
