Snickers Salad is a creamy, chunky Midwestern potluck dessert with tart apples, chopped candy bars, and a caramel drizzle. The apples bring the crunch, while vanilla pudding and whipped topping hold everything together. It is served cold, and the main planning question is not how to cook it—it is how far ahead to mix it without losing that fresh apple texture.
How to make Snickers salad: Whisk instant vanilla pudding with cold milk, fold in cold whipped topping, then gently mix in chopped apples and Snickers. Allow 15 minutes for prep and at least 1 hour to chill. Add the reserved candy and caramel just before serving.
Why You’ll Love It
- No cooking needed. This is a whisk, chop, and fold dessert, with the refrigerator handling the chill time.
- Tart apples balance the sweetness. Granny Smith apples bring a crisp bite alongside the candy and caramel.
- A thick, creamy coating. Instant pudding and whipped topping coat the apple pieces without a cooked custard.
- Some make-ahead flexibility. You can prepare it the day you serve it or up to 1 day ahead with care.
Ingredient Notes
Granny Smith apples are my pick here. Look for firm, bruise-free apples. Their tartness balances the sweet ingredients, and they stay crisp overnight better than softer red apples such as Red Delicious. Leave the pieces bite-sized rather than turning them into tiny bits.
Instant vanilla pudding matters. Cook-and-serve pudding is not a substitute in this uncooked method; it will not set properly and makes the salad runnier. With the small amount of milk used here, the pudding base looks thick and paste-like. That is expected, not a cue to add the milk called for on the pudding box.
Milk and whipped topping should both be cold. Whole milk or 2 percent milk works. Thaw frozen whipped topping before using it, but keep it refrigerated; warm topping can turn runny. Fold it into the pudding gently rather than beating it in.
Snickers and caramel go into different stages of the recipe. Most of the chopped candy gets folded into the salad, with a small handful saved for the top. The caramel goes on just before serving. Lemon juice is optional for make-ahead apples, and there is no measured amount needed—just enough to coat them, followed by a thorough pat dry.
Ingredients
- 1 package instant vanilla pudding mix, 3.4 ounces; instant, not cook-and-serve
- 1/2 cup milk, cold, whole or 2 percent
- 8 ounces whipped topping, such as Cool Whip, thawed but kept cold
- 4 large Granny Smith apples, firm, cored and cut into 1/2-inch pieces (about 6 cups)
- 4 Snickers bars, 1.86 ounces each, cut into 1/2-inch pieces; keep a small handful for the top
- 1/4 cup caramel sauce, for drizzling
- Lemon juice, optional, only if making ahead; just enough to coat the apples
How to Make Snickers Salad
1. Make the pudding base. In a large bowl, whisk the instant pudding mix and cold milk until smooth and thick. With only 1/2 cup of milk it will look like a thick paste, not soft pudding; that is normal.
2. Fold in the whipped topping. Add the cold whipped topping and fold it in gently with a spatula until no streaks remain. Avoid vigorous stirring, which can deflate the topping.
3. Cut the apples. Core the apples and cut them into 1/2-inch pieces. If making ahead, toss the pieces with a little lemon juice, then pat them dry with paper towels so the extra liquid does not thin the base.
4. Chop the Snickers. Cut the Snickers bars into 1/2-inch pieces. Set a small handful aside for the top.
5. Fold it together. Add the apples and Snickers to the bowl and fold gently until every piece is coated.
6. Chill. Cover the bowl and refrigerate for at least 1 hour, until cold.
7. Top and serve. Just before serving, scatter the reserved Snickers over the top and drizzle with the caramel sauce. Serve cold.
How Far Ahead to Make It Before the Apples Brown and the Salad Gets Watery
For the freshest texture, make Snickers salad the day you plan to serve it. A few hours ahead is a useful window: mix it, cover it, and let it chill. Up to 1 day ahead is also supported, but making it earlier than that risks watery apples and deflated whipped topping.
The creamy coating helps slow browning, so fold until every apple piece is covered. For an overnight salad, toss the chopped apples with lemon juice or lemon-lime soda, then pat them dry before adding them. Do not leave that extra liquid clinging to the fruit; it can thin the pudding mixture.
There is no exact hour when every apple starts browning or the salad suddenly becomes watery. The quality change is gradual. Apples may brown a little as the salad sits, and moisture from them can make the whipped topping separate. Softer apples can also lose their crispness overnight.
Refrigerated leftover guidance ranges from 2 to 3 days, but that is not a promise of freshly mixed texture. Plan on serving the main bowl the day it is made or the following day, rather than counting on several days of advance preparation. Keep the caramel for the last moment.
Keeping the Creamy Base from Turning Runny
A thick pudding base at the start is normal for this recipe. Whisk it until smooth and thick, then fold in the cold whipped topping. You are making a coating for apples and candy, not a bowl of pudding prepared according to the package directions.
If the finished salad is loose, check the method before changing the ingredients: use instant pudding, keep the milk and topping cold, dry any treated apples, and fold gently. Softer fruit additions, including bananas, grapes, strawberries, and pineapple, can make the salad watery faster.
For refrigerated leftovers that have separated a little, stir gently before serving. A little extra whipped topping can help smooth the mixture. That is a texture adjustment, not a way to extend storage time.
When to Add the Candy
Snickers pieces become harder in the refrigerator. I like them a little softer, so I usually leave the candy out during the chill and fold it in just before serving. You can still save a small handful for the top.
Add the caramel at serving time either way. The finished bowl needs only the reserved candy and that drizzle; there is no need for an elaborate topping arrangement.
Variations
- Mix the apples. Use Granny Smith with a sweeter apple. Golden Delicious is another option, and its flesh stays white after slicing longer than most apples.
- Change the candy. Toffee bits can replace the chopped Snickers.
- Use salted caramel. Drizzle salted caramel sauce over the chilled salad just before serving.
Storage & Reheating
USDA FSIS says to cover leftovers, wrap them airtight or seal them in containers, and refrigerate promptly. USDA FSIS says cold perishable food should be kept at 40 F or below. For this salad, plan around the shorter texture window described above rather than treating general leftover guidance as a freshness guarantee.
USDA FSIS says to discard cold leftovers left out for more than 2 hours at room temperature, or more than 1 hour when the temperature is above 90 F. USDA FSIS says cold buffet dishes can be kept cold by setting them in bowls of ice or using small trays replaced often.
This is a cold dessert, so there is no reheating step. Serve refrigerated leftovers cold after gently stirring them. Do not freeze the salad: the apples and whipped topping thaw watery.
What to Serve With It
For a dessert spread, pair this bowl with caramel apple dip if you want another apple option. You could also offer creamsicle orange fluff or pineapple coconut fluff alongside it. For a different dessert on the table, choose Oreo dirt cake or no-bake banana split cake. If you would rather keep the apple-and-caramel theme, add slow cooker caramel apple dump cake.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can I make Snickers salad the night before?
Yes, you can make it up to 1 day ahead. Treat the chopped apples with lemon juice or lemon-lime soda, pat them dry, and fold them in until fully coated. Store the salad airtight in the refrigerator and add the caramel just before serving.
How long does Snickers salad keep?
It is best the day it is made. Covered or airtight refrigerated leftovers generally keep for 2 to 3 days, but the apples can brown and soften, and the mixture gets more watery as it sits. That leftover window is not the recommended make-ahead window.
How do I stop the apples from browning and the salad from getting watery?
Coat every apple piece in the creamy base. For make-ahead preparation, treat the apples with lemon juice or lemon-lime soda and pat them dry. Use instant pudding and cold ingredients, then fold gently. These steps help with browning and texture, but apple moisture can still cause separation over time.
What apples are best for Snickers salad?
Firm Granny Smith apples are a good choice because their tartness balances the sweet coating and candy. They also hold their crispness overnight better than softer red apples such as Red Delicious. Golden Delicious is an option when you want an apple whose cut flesh stays white longer.
Final Notes
Leave the caramel beside the refrigerated bowl until it is time to serve, then finish the top. If firm chilled candy is not your preference, use the last-minute candy option rather than letting the whole salad warm up.
